“Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” John 4:10
Society calls out for water to address the dry issues that continue to plague her. This very text addresses a societal issue. Here we find Jesus sitting by Jacobs well waiting for the disciples to return. While a woman from another ethnic background comes to draw water from the well. Through the conversation Christ reveals to this woman that she is living beneath the standard she was created to live. Many of God’s created people are living beneath His standard. Consequently many find themselves struggling through life, wondering why it seems so difficult. Here Jesus helps us; this living water that He speaks of is water that only He gives. It is given through His divinely inspired word. This water is reviving. Like the natural water that revives a person suffering from thirst, the living water that is given through the divinely inspired word of God is a word that has the capacity to revive the lives of those who are suffering from thirst. This enriching quality of God’s inspired word refreshes and restores the thirsty soul.
Not only does the divinely inspired word of God revive, it reveals. Through the conversation with this woman, Jesus revealed to her that she had allowed herself to be a victim. There are many who have taken on the life of a victim, living in fear. The reason the woman was going to the well during this time of the day (noon) was because she was afraid of what others would say about her. She was afraid of the looks and the remarks that would be made. Jesus shows her that she need not be afraid because she doesn’t have to continue to be a victim. With the divinely inspired word of God there is the revelation that no matter who you are He still loves you.
Finally the divinely inspired word rescues. This text is a prime example of people living lives in spiritual poverty. Before you can address any physical conditions that exist in life the spiritual condition has to be fortified. Then one can adequately deal with the outside issues. Jesus rescues this woman first from herself and then from ignorance. He gives her something she did not have before, purpose and dignity. When you have purpose and dignity you believe that you are able to do anything that you put your mind to. This is where God desires for all of us to be.
